About me

Julian Walker Self Pic.png

After spending close to ten years in financial services consulting, I found myself yearning for professional experiences that prioritized considerations for people and the natural world over business processes and profit margins. Luckily, I found the practice of design which has allowed me to do just that. I often describe design as philosophy in action, because as thoughtful designers, we're forced to consider philosophies and worldviews as we introduce interventions into the world. We’re forced to consider the context of our existence.

Our existence is complex, in other words, dependent. All things exist because of and in relation to other things. As a designer, my joy comes from seeking to understand both the internal and external contexts that form our relationships with: each other, the natural world, the societal systems we participate in, the products, services, and other interventions with which we interact, and the technologies we employ.

My desire to understand these relationships is rooted in a larger desire to design impactful experiences that have the potential to move people toward more equitable and just futures. Whether it be working with communities to imagine and design for anti-racist futures, designing experiences that support networks of collective care, or designing more useful and enjoyable service experiences, my hope is to further develop my design practice in ways that consider empathy, respect, connection, and reflection before action.
